We would be very pleased to welcome you to East Coast School of Languages (ECSL) in Halifax, Nova Scotia! We are very different from the bigger cities in Canada. One of the main advantages of studying in Halifax is that you will be in a total English immersion environment. This is really useful if you are here to study English. You want to hear English on the street, in the stores, and in the restaurants and bars – not just in your classroom. By surrounding yourself with native English speakers you will make better progress in your studies. Also, the people in Halifax are known for their friendliness and welcoming attitude to international visitors. You will feel at home very quickly.

East Coast School of Languages is owned and operated by three ESL instructors so you can be sure that we have very high academic standards. You can choose from a range of programs including English for Business (with optional internship), university preparation, general English, or TOEFL. Our classes are very small (usually between 8 and 10) so you get lots of personal attention.

We have an active social program so you can participate in activities each week, including a free conversation club. We also have lots of festivals and events in Halifax so you will not be bored! Our host families take great care of their students and will be there to meet you at the airport and welcome you to your new home.

Hello, my name is Kanae Ohashi and I am from Japan. I have been here in Halifax for 3 months. I like the waterfront and I chose it here because it's a small city. Halifax is a small city and I feel people here are very kind and friendly. Sometimes people start talking on the bus even if they don't know each other. There are lots of festivals in summer so I am going to do some volunteer work soon. ECSL has many good teachers and they are very friendly.

When I first moved to Canada, the thing that I was most worried about was my ability to use the English language. ECSL helped me to become more comfortable in Canada by helping me communicate with the people who live here. I think that my English has improved from the time I started studying at ECSL because the teachers were knowledgeable, helpful and made the classroom fun.

I came here in November 2009. When I came to ECSL I was very nervous. I have made a lot of friends who are from Korea, China and other countries. Our teachers were very nice, kind and helpful.
